Thieves turn to Bluetooth to steal electronic gadgets

Lately there has been reports of thieves being on a burglary spree in Gaborone and surrounding. It is still puzzling to many of us just as to how do these crooks never miss their targets. Just recently my neighborhood was raided by thieves, and no house that had a PC or cellphone in it was spared! So many of us are wondering what is it they can do to avoid being targeted by thieves.

Well, have you thought about the capabilities and robustness of Bluetooth technology?

Chances are that you never take off your laptop battery when you leave it in your house, or maybe you do not even remember the last time you checked your cellphone connectivity function status (your Bluetooth connectivity might be on). Some of us carry our laptops with us when leaving the house only to leave it in the car with the Bluetooth connectivity on! By doing so, you have not only turned into a prime target but you have made their work even more easy; they just need to carry a device that detect Bluetooth around parked cars instead of the hustle to jump over electric fancies and finding their ways around the neighborhood watch programs.

Word has it that thieves are now using Bluetooth technology to identify houses and cars that have electronics devices such as laptops, plasma screens, cellphones etc. Please be sure to remove your laptop battery when you leave it in your house or car. Also always make sure that your Bluetooth connectivity status of your phone or plasma screen is off when you are not using it. By doing this you may just be able to break the thieves new winner's code!

  2. Thank you for the comment Kevin. However, i doubt if you have done your research well. Bluetooth enabled devices wake up when connection is requested! Here is how it happens; bluetooth enabled devices have what is called a "wake up on bluetooth" functionality that make them to be sensed by connection requesting devices. Thieves dont necessarily have to connect to the device but knowing that the device is there in one of the cars or house is enough. This loophole have not only been used in Botswana only, and a bit of research ll be helpful to you Sir.

  4. This is a great article! Bluetooth technology has really grown over the years and “hackers” and “thieves” have taken advantage of that by exploiting vulnerabilities through activities such as bluesnarfing, War-Nibbling, Bluetooth attack and many other different types of wireless attack.
A lot of people forgets to switch off Bluetooth on their devices (these days almost any gadget has Bluetooth, iPad, laptop, iPod etc.) and this is very dangerous as this might lead to the attack mentioned on the article. Thieves may use hacking and cracking tools, moving along the street (or building), trying to find gadgets (a process called reconnaissance) that are connected to wireless technologies (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi) and if they find any device connected, they may break in to steal. This practice is very common in developed nations. Moreover, Bluetooth protocol uses the E0 encryption method which has manifested a number of vulnerabilities on attacks.
@Kevin, It is very important that when we comment on blogs we should be constructive not judgmental like you are doing. We shouldn’t jump to conclusions on technologies or matters we don’t have a clue about.
